The power's back on and the pool equipment isn't. Before you start flipping switches, there's an order to this — and one step most people skip that quietly kills pumps a week later. Here's the sequence we use across Cypress and Greater Houston.

Order matters. Powering everything at once hides which part actually failed.
Here's the one that generates calls a fortnight after every major outage — and it isn't a fault at all.
After an extended power cut, many automation and control systems come back up with the clock wrong, or drop back to a default schedule. The equipment looks perfectly healthy. The panel lights up, the pump runs when you press the button, everything seems fine.
But the pump is now running at the wrong time, for the wrong duration — or not automatically at all. In a Houston August, a pool that quietly loses several hours of daily circulation doesn't look like an equipment problem. It looks like a chemistry problem, about four days later, when the water turns.

This is the reason we tell people not to keep flipping the switch hoping it catches.
A pool pump relies on the water passing through it for cooling and lubrication at the mechanical seal — the part that keeps water in the wet end and out of the motor. Run it dry and that seal overheats. Plastic housings can distort, O-rings can harden, and the seal faces can score.
The cruel part is the timing. The pump usually keeps working. Then a few days or a couple of weeks later a drip appears under the motor — and that drip is water finding its way toward the motor bearings. Left alone it takes the motor with it.
So if your pump ran dry during or after the outage, don't file it under "no harm done". Watch underneath it, and if you see moisture forming, get it looked at while it's still a seal job. That's the whole argument for catching it early — see pool pump repair.

Houston doesn't get a brief flicker and a quick restoration. When Beryl came through in July 2024 it left millions of customers without power, and plenty of homes waited the better part of a week. That length changes what happens to a pool.
A few hours off is nothing. Several days off, in Houston heat, means the water sits still and warm with no sanitiser circulating — and by the time the grid is back, the equipment problem and a water problem are arriving together. That's why the restart sequence matters: you want to know within ten minutes whether the pump is actually moving water, not discover it a week later.

Stop and call if any of these are true: the breaker or GFCI trips again as soon as you reset it; the pad was flooded or the motor shows a water line; the pump hums but won't turn; you see or smell burnt wiring; water is dripping from the pump after a dry run; or the automation panel won't power up or shows a fault you can't clear.
None of those are DIY territory — they're either electrical or they're a component that's already failed. In order: the breaker, then the GFCI, then the automation or control panel. A surge commonly trips the breaker or GFCI, and both need a full reset — push the breaker firmly to off before switching it back on. If either trips again straight away, stop and have it diagnosed; a repeat trip is a genuine fault, not a nuisance. Only after power is confirmed should you look at priming the pump.
No. If flood water reached the motor, the heater's burner tray or the automation panel, leave the breaker off and have it inspected before power is restored. Energising a submerged motor or control board can destroy a component that might otherwise have been recoverable, and it presents a serious shock risk. Usually because the automation system lost its clock or schedule during the outage, so the pump isn't running the hours you think it is. The equipment looks fine and responds to manual control, but circulation has quietly dropped — and in Houston heat that shows up as algae a few days later. Check the time, date and run schedule on the panel, not just whether the pump turns on.
Keep an eye on it. Running dry overheats the mechanical seal, and the failure is usually delayed — the pump keeps working, then starts dripping days or weeks later. That water tracks toward the motor bearings, which turns a seal repair into a motor replacement. If you see moisture forming under the pump, get it looked at while it's still the cheaper fix.
Look for three things: water visibly returning to the pool at the returns, a strainer pot that's full and clear rather than churning with air, and a filter pressure gauge sitting at its normal reading once it settles. A pump can hum, spin and light up while moving no water at all — usually because it lost prime or is drawing air through a lid O-ring that wasn't reseated properly.
