Sometimes — and it depends almost entirely on one thing: whether anyone switched it on while it was still wet. Here's what survives a flooded pad in Greater Houston, what doesn't, and what to do in the first hour.
Harvey, Imelda and Beryl taught this metro a lesson that shows up on our schedule within about seventy-two hours of any real rain event: drowned motors and water-logged heaters — most of them made worse after the water went down, not while it was up.
A pool pump motor isn't a sealed unit. It's an air-cooled electric motor with vents at both ends, and when the pad goes under, water gets into the windings, the bearings and the capacitor housing. Sitting wet is survivable. Being energised while wet usually isn't. That single act is what turns a motor we could have dried, rebuilt and returned to service into a replacement — and it's a real shock risk to whoever flips the switch.
So the first hour isn't a repair. It's three things: leave the breaker off, don't test anything, and take photographs before you move a single item.
This is the step people skip, and it's the one that costs them money later. Before anything gets moved, hosed off or thrown out, photograph the pad from several angles with something in frame for scale.
What matters most is how high the water reached on each piece of equipment. There's usually a visible silt or debris line on the housings. That line is the single most important piece of evidence for both the repair decision and any insurance claim — because for almost every component on the pad, the answer is determined by whether the water got above a specific height on it.
Photograph the mud line on the pump motor, the heater cabinet, the automation enclosure and the salt system power supply. Get the data plates too, with model and serial numbers. Once you've hosed the pad down that evidence is gone, and nobody can reconstruct it.
Flood damage isn't uniform across the pad. Some things clean up and go back to work, some are a judgement call, and one category isn't negotiable no matter how good it looks afterwards.
If it was never energised wet, a submerged motor can frequently be dismantled, dried properly and returned to service with new bearings and a new shaft seal. Not always worth it on an older single-speed — but genuinely possible.
The housing, impeller, strainer pot and filter tank are already designed to hold water. They generally need cleaning, fresh O-rings and an inspection rather than replacement.
A gas valve that has been submerged must be replaced, never dried and reused. That's the standard manufacturer and gas-code position, not a preference. If water reached the burner tray and control area, that heater isn't going back into service as it stands.
Control boards and relays may power up and look perfectly normal after a soaking. Corrosion on the traces keeps advancing regardless, and these often fail weeks later, one function at a time.
The cell itself is built to sit in water and usually cleans up. The power supply is electronics in a box, so it follows the same rules as an automation panel — corrosion now, symptoms later.
Flood water moves silt into conduit and junction boxes. Wiring and bonding need inspecting before anything is re-energised — this is the part that's about safety rather than equipment cost.
The most common call we get after a flood is from someone whose pump ran when they tested it — and who's now wondering why we still want to look at it.
An electric motor with water in it will often run. What the water has done is contaminate the bearing grease and start corrosion on the windings and the bearing races. The motor that ran for ten minutes on Tuesday starts screeching in three weeks, and by then the bearings have usually taken the shaft with them.
If your pad went under and the pump has already been run, it isn't automatically ruined — but it does need looking at while the fix is still bearings and a seal rather than a whole motor. That's a very different conversation from a replacement, and the window for it is short.

These two situations get treated as one problem, and they aren't. If your equipment simply lost power in a storm and the pad never went under water, you're dealing with a restart sequence — breaker, GFCI, automation, prime, verify flow — and you can work through that yourself. This post is the other case: water reached the equipment. The moment that's true, the restart sequence stops applying — because every step in it involves putting power through something that may be full of water. Flood first, power second, never the other way round.
If you aren't certain how high the water got, treat it as a flood until someone has looked at it. The cost of being cautious is a service call. The cost of being wrong is a motor, a heater, or an injury.

The other conversation worth having while the pad is already apart is elevation. A pad that flooded once in Cypress, Katy or along any of the bayou-adjacent parts of the metro will flood again. Raising equipment onto a taller pad, relocating the automation enclosure higher on the wall, or simply getting the heater controls above the historic water line is far cheaper done during a rebuild than as its own project later.

Often yes, provided it was never switched on while wet. A motor that sat submerged but stayed de-energised can usually be dismantled, dried out properly and put back into service with new bearings and a new shaft seal. What ruins the odds is energising it — running current through wet windings causes the damage that makes replacement the only option. On an older single-speed motor a rebuild may not be worth it against the cost of a modern variable-speed replacement, but that's an economics question, not a possibility question.

Yes. Working now and being undamaged aren't the same thing. Motor bearings run on contaminated grease for a few weeks before they start to fail, and corrosion on an automation board advances quietly until functions drop out one at a time. The equipment most likely to strand you is the equipment that passed its first test and got forgotten about. A post-flood inspection is about catching the delayed failures while they're still small repairs.
Always, and before you move or rinse anything. Photograph each piece of equipment from several angles, capture the silt or debris line showing how high the water reached, and get the data plates with model and serial numbers. That water line determines the repair decision for nearly every component on the pad, and it's the evidence an insurer will want. Once the pad is hosed down it can't be reconstructed, and you lose both the diagnostic information and the claim support.
Elevation is the practical answer. A pad that has flooded once will very likely flood again, so the fix is getting the vulnerable parts above the historic water line — a raised equipment pad, the automation enclosure remounted higher, and the heater controls lifted clear. The time to do this is during a rebuild, when the equipment is already disconnected and the labour is largely being paid for anyway. Doing it later as a standalone project costs considerably more for the same result.
