Why Houston's Fill Water Is Hard on Salt Cells and Pool Heaters

Two identical pools, two identical salt cells, same brand, same year. One is scaled solid in eighteen months. The other is still going at five years. The difference usually isn't the equipment — it's what comes out of the hose.

"Houston water" isn't one thing

Almost every article about pool chemistry in this city talks about Houston water as though a single tap feeds four million people. It doesn't, and that single assumption is why so much of the advice out there doesn't match what people actually see in their own backyards.

The City of Houston alone runs six separate community public water systems. Its main system is supplied by three surface water purification plants and thirty-nine groundwater plants. Across that main system, the utility's own 2025 water quality report puts average daily production at roughly 90% surface water and 10% groundwater.

The surface water comes from named, and very different, places: the San Jacinto River, Lake Conroe, Lake Houston, the Trinity River and Lake Livingston. The groundwater comes from wells in the Evangeline and Chicot aquifers, drawn from deeper than 750 feet.

And that's just the City. Large parts of the northwest — much of Cypress, Tomball, Magnolia and the surrounding county — sit outside the City of Houston system entirely, served instead by municipal utility districts and small city systems that lean far more heavily on wells.

So the honest answer to "how hard is Houston's water?" is: it depends which system serves your street, and what that system happened to be blending the week you topped the pool off.

Why the source matters

Groundwater has had longer to dissolve rock

Hardness is mostly dissolved calcium and magnesium, and where water picks those up is not mysterious. Water moving slowly through mineral formations underground has years — sometimes a great deal longer — in contact with the rock it's dissolving. Surface water sitting in a reservoir has had comparatively little.

That's the whole mechanism. Groundwater-fed supplies generally arrive harder than surface-fed ones, and a system that blends the two lands somewhere in between depending on the ratio that day.

Which is exactly why the same salt cell behaves so differently across this metro. A pool topped up from a mostly-surface supply and a pool topped up from a well-fed district aren't running the same experiment, even if everything on the pad is identical.

One caution worth stating plainly: you'll find confident hardness numbers for Houston all over the internet. Nearly all of them trace back to water-softener companies, and hardness is an unregulated parameter — utilities aren't required to publish it, and Houston's current report lists it without values. We'd rather tell you the mechanism we can document than quote a number we can't stand behind. If you want your own figure, a drop-based hardness test on your fill water costs very little and tells you more than any citywide average could.

What hard fill water actually damages

Calcium doesn't attack everything equally. It settles where water is warm, moving, or electrically charged — which is a fair description of the most expensive things on your pad.

Salt cell plates

Warm, charged, constant flow — the ideal place for scale. It insulates the plates, output falls, and the controller starts reporting faults long before the cell's rated life is up.

Heater heat exchangers

The hottest surface the water touches. Deposits there act as insulation, so the heater burns longer for the same result — and eventually fails in ways that aren't cheap.

Tile & the waterline

The band you can actually see. Evaporation concentrates minerals right at the surface, so the waterline is where scale shows up first and most visibly.

Filters & plumbing

Deposits narrow passages and coat filter media, which quietly costs you flow. Less flow makes every other piece of equipment work harder.

Notice the pattern: hard water rarely breaks anything outright. It shortens lives — quietly, over years, across several components at once. That's what makes it easy to misdiagnose as a run of bad luck with equipment.

The summer multiplier

Evaporation concentrates everything you started with

Here's the part that turns a slow problem into an August problem. When pool water evaporates, the water leaves and the minerals stay. Every gallon you replace brings a fresh load of calcium in with it — and none of the previous load left.

Through a Houston summer that cycle runs continuously for months. By late August, calcium hardness in an untreated pool is meaningfully higher than it was in May, purely from topping up. Nothing about your habits changed; the water just got more concentrated.

What actually works

You cannot chemically remove calcium — but you're not stuck

This is where most advice goes wrong, so it's worth being precise. No product you pour in removes calcium from your pool. Anything promising to "eliminate" hardness is misdescribing what it does.

What you can genuinely do falls into three groups.

Sequestrants hold calcium in solution. They don't remove it — they keep it dissolved so it's less likely to deposit on your cell, heater and tile. They need re-dosing because they break down over time, and they're a delaying tactic rather than a cure. Used consistently, they're a cheap way to buy your equipment years.

Partial drain and refill dilutes it. Take some water out, put softer water in, and the concentration drops. It's blunt but effective. In Houston it comes with a real caveat: this area's water table can be high, and draining a pool too far can float or shift the shell. That is not a DIY job here — a partial drain needs someone who knows how far is safe for your pool and your ground conditions. Our pool drain down service covers doing it properly.

Mobile reverse osmosis filters the water in place. A truck-mounted RO unit strips minerals out and returns the same water to the pool. It costs more than draining, but it avoids the shell-flotation risk entirely and wastes far less water — which is why it's increasingly the sensible option in a metro with our water table.

And for the scale that's already visible on tile and surfaces, chemistry won't touch it — that's a mechanical job. Bead blasting takes the deposits off without damaging what's underneath.

Practical routine

What we'd actually tell you to do

Test the hardness of your fill water, not just your pool — once is enough to know what you're working with. Then test the pool a couple of times a season, because the summer trend only goes one way.

If you're on a well-fed district and running a salt pool, assume you're on the demanding end and plan for it: keep a sequestrant in rotation, inspect the cell rather than waiting for a warning, and budget for cell life at the shorter end of the manufacturer's range rather than the longer.

Keep the rest of your chemistry balanced too. Hardness doesn't act alone — pH and alkalinity drifting high are what tip dissolved calcium into deposited calcium, which is why a pool that's chemically neglected scales far faster than one that isn't, on identical water.

Is Houston water hard enough to damage pool equipment?

It's hard enough to matter, but there's no single Houston figure. There are only two ways to genuinely reduce it. Partial drain and refill dilutes the pool with softer water, and mobile reverse osmosis filters minerals out and returns the same water. No chemical removes calcium — sequestrants only hold it in solution so it's less likely to deposit, and they need re-dosing. In Houston, draining carries a real risk: a high water table can float or shift a pool shell if the level drops too far, so a partial drain should be done by someone who knows how far is safe for your pool.

Does hard water damage a pool heater?

Yes, and the heat exchanger is the vulnerable part. It's the hottest surface the water touches, which makes it a prime site for mineral deposits. Scale acts as insulation, so the heater has to run longer to reach the same temperature — you pay for that in gas before you ever see a fault. Left long enough, restricted flow and localised overheating can damage the exchanger itself, which is one of the more expensive components on the pad.

Can I just use a sequestrant and forget about it?

A sequestrant is genuinely useful, but understand what it does. It binds dissolved calcium so it stays in solution rather than depositing on your cell, heater and tile — it does not remove anything from the pool, and the total hardness keeps climbing as you top up. Sequestrants also break down over time and need re-dosing on a schedule. Think of it as buying your equipment extra years cheaply, not as a permanent answer. Eventually a pool on hard fill water still needs dilution or reverse osmosis.

Should I test my fill water or just my pool?

Both, and the fill water first. Testing what comes out of the hose tells you what you're adding every time you top up, which is the thing that actually determines how fast your pool concentrates. Test it once and you'll know whether you're on the demanding end. Then test the pool a couple of times through the season to watch the trend, because with summer evaporation it only moves one direction. A simple drop-based hardness test is inexpensive and far more useful than any citywide average.
